Analysis: Bali volcano

In Indonesia, a volcano is creating a bit of a crisis. Although it posed a possible threat earlier this year, people are unsure whether this billowing of smoke will fade as just a false alarm, or will escalate to an eruption.

This possible tragedy poses a large question to inhabitants of the surrounding area: should we leave our livelihoods because of the chance of ruin? Many people in the surrounding area of Mount Agung have chosen to stay due to their assumption that this event will end in the same way as the similar false alarm in September, while others have chosen to stay because they won’t abandon their farms and livestock. The problem with this hope that the situation won’t escalate is that if Mount Agung does erupt, then tens of thousands of lives will be at risk.

As for the closing of the airports, this puts a significant halt on the economy of Indonesia, as much of the income is received through tourism. Firstly, because no one can get in or out of Bali, the commerce there of new tourists has diminished significantly. Also, in the instance that Mount Agung does erupt, it is likely that the tourism industry will decrease significantly in Indonesia because of the fear of being caught in a natural disaster. Even if Mount Agung stays dormant, the industry may take a hit because of the worry of getting stuck in an airport or another natural disaster that does not end in an insignificant fashion.
