Cost of living pushing Australian workers into homelessness

The number of employed Australians seeking help for homelessness has jumped by 30% in about three years. The costs of houses have gone up tremendously and this has led to people living in their cars with their families. A recent analysis shows that 20,302 employed Australians sought homelessness support in 2016 and in 2017, well up from 15,931 in 2013 and 2014. A counsel blamed the unfortunate rise of homelessness on “sluggish wage growth” and high house prices. A working mother with three kids has found herself living in her car. She also drives two hours just to get to work as an in house care giver. Hard working people who go to their jobs everyday, all day, deserve a home to go to every night. “The ABS data showed wages grew by 0.6% in the December quarter and 2.1% throughout last year. Public sector wages grew the most, increasing by 2.4% through the year. Private sector wages rose by 1.9%.” These statistics are truly heartbreaking, how fast everything is changing for so many people.
