China’s Foreign Ministry says it has expressed serious concern to the United States after US warships passed through the strait between Taiwan and China.
The US Pacific Fleet sent 2 warships through the Taiwan Strait on Monday.
Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a news conference on Tuesday that the US naval operation was a provocation against China.
Hua said the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive one in China-US relations. She added that China urges the US to cautiously and appropriately deal with the issue to promote peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
China has flown bombers near Taiwan in an apparent bid to pressure president Tsai Ing-wen, who Beijing considers an advocate of the island’s independence.
US President Donald Trump has been placing importance on Taiwan amid growing friction with Beijing over issues that include trade and China’s growing maritime activities in the South China Sea.
The Global Times, which is affiliated with China’s Communist Party, said in an editorial on Tuesday that the US naval operation is aimed at continuing the pressure on China.
