China and Japan have recently met together to discuss strengthening their ties to one another. It was only 46 years ago that the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed, which marked the first step towards brighter and better bilateral ties. The Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said “China will unswervingly continue its reform and opening-up. China’s greater-scale opening-up to the world has provided broad space for higher-level cooperation between China and Japan,”.
This statement comes to show how much progression China is taking away from being a true (or mostly true) communist country and starting to become more Democratic. Many years ago, after China stepped up and stopped being taken advantage of by all the major countries and they turned communist, they had shut their doors to a lot of reform and had very strict laws set into place. Since then however they have been reforming and turning away from being a strictly communist country.
When it comes to the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, I believe that it is a good thing to see these two countries starting to work together in a peaceful and non-threatening way. It is at the benefit of both countries that they are working together rather than fighting eachother, saying that they are both really close to eachother and are both trade partners. As the popular saying goes “why have enemies when you could have friends,”, you could definitly apply it to this. Why would these two countries fight eachother when it would be at the benefit of each for them to work together. This is where you can see some of the reciprocity theory come in, where if you help them they will help you. With them trading with each other for resources that they need, they minimize being a threat to one another because they then become dependant on each other. This also helps them because they can focus their needs on inside their country and their economical needs rather than being afriad that one will attack the other/break the deal with one another.
