In the second election cycle since the creation of Myanmar’s New Democratic system in 2015, the ruling party of President Aung San Suu Kyi has won enough votes to “form a new government”. The Myanmar president, a Nobel laureate who has built a complicated global reputation, has gained incredible popularity among the country’s Bamar (Burmese) majority ever since her ascendancy to Democratic power in 2015, replacing the previous military rule which placed under house arrest for 15 years.
This, however, is only a fraction of the story of Myanmar. While Aung San Suu Kyi has a strong base among the nation’s ethnic majority, with the country’s minorities, it is a far uglier story. The Myanmar government, particularly in the state of Rakhine, has been accused by global human rights organizations of perpetrating an ongoing genocide against the nation’s minority Rohingya Muslim population. There is legitimate proof that there has been a systematic effort from government forces to effectively root out the Rohingya people from Myanmar at least since the year 2015. There is evidence that in 2017, the government launched a bloody crackdown against the Rohingya which led to the deaths of thousands and a resultant refugee crisis that has seen the Rohingya people flee to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh in the hundreds of thousands. The reported 600,000+ Rohingya still living in Myanmar are suffering through Apartheid-like persecution, stripped of any rights to citizenship. So while Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD continue to reject of claims of genocide from humans rights organizations, there is still no evidence as to the Myanmar government ceasing its oppression of the Rohingya people. It is undoubtedly disturbing that the Myanmar president, who built her reputation as a democratic icon, has refused to even publicly recognize the bloody and horrific human rights violations continually being perpetrated by her own government.
