During the Olympics when asked about any politics or policies, any Chinese official has stated that they will not be talking about any politics or policies. Though when the organizing committee in Beijing daily news conference was asked on Thursday the polite facade broke a little. When asked the usual questions, a spokeswoman Yan Jiarong stated “that there is only one China in the world”. Questions of China’s treatment of Uyghurs were also brought up, the spokeswoman also stated that the living conditions were “based on lies”. With multiple diplomatic boycotts surrounding the games due to human rights violations, China tried very hard to keep the topics solely on their side. Though during the last press conference major topics came up synch as Taiwan, Xinjiang, and the safety of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. With the conflicts revolving around China when it comes to not only Taiwan and Hong Kong, the spokespeople were only saying vague answers that restated China’s point of view.
I know that China will never fully admit any wrongdoing in either areas, but this is hurting the country in the long run. Though I do believe that there is no good way for China to admit anything. Either way it will hurt the country. I believe that these violations that China keeps enacting should not go unpunished like they have been lately. It seems that the only actual punishment that might have been brought on to the country is the diplomatic boycott that is happening currently with the games. If these violations by such a great power that is possible to become one of the bipolar powers in the world, are not checked what makes other countries think that they can’t do the same.
It connects to class by China being a major power in the world. The world is unipolar at the moment but with the speed that China is growing, it is possible in the next decade or two for it to become a bipolar system. Not only could the system change but it connects to the class by the multiple human rights violations done by China. In the Xinjiang region the treatment of Uyghurs is a massive human rights violation, along with many other examples that happen in the country. The diplomatic boycott connects to the class also by using a liberalist theory of using diplomacy rather than force.
