A Myanmar citizen, Hay, fled to Thailand to escape the military violence in her country. Hay and her family decided to flee to Thailand. Though the bordering country does not want them. Thailand’s government does not want to upset the military government in Myanmar, so all of the refugees fleeing from Myanmar to Thailand are being told to leave the country. Even though it is against international law to send refugees back to their country in which they could be in danger from, Thailand is not listening to this and has sent thousands of refugees back to Myanmar. The refugees that have fled to Thailand have been moving across the border between the two countries along the Moei River.

I believe that even though Thailand wants to stay on Myanmar’s good side they should be helping the refugees. It is against the law to make refugees go back to their country where they are in danger and that is exactly what is happening in Myanmar. I believe that if Thailand does not help the refugees soon then either a global power needs to step up to make sure the refugees will be taken care of or safe. Or that the refugees are able to flee to a different country that does not hold the same value of messing with Myanmar that Thailand has.

This relates to the international relations class because the conflict in Myanmar is causing alot of chaos in that region. With the rohingya being killed, and the practically civil war going on in the region, a lot of people are going to want to get out of the country. According to international law, what Thailand is doing is illegal by sending the refugees back to face danger. Though it is in Thailand’s national interest to make sure that the unstable country bordering them does not put its focus on them. Still though if they don’t stop turning away refugees they could face international consequences.
