The Biden administration has drafted an executive order that would give the Department of Justice vast powers to stop foreign adversaries like China accessing Americans’ personal data. This would also direct the Department of Health and Human Services to prevent federal funding from supporting the transfer of U.S. health data to foreign adversaries. Donald Trump tried to ban the apps in 2020 alleging data collected by them could be given to Beijing and used to track users and censor content. China and the apps have denied any improper use of U.S. data. “What’s clear is the Biden administration is grappling with how to address this new risk frontier in the U.S.-China relationship”
President Joe Biden finally takes a stance to the all powerful China to lessen the amount of influence they have over the data that encapsulated the United States. The executive order being carried out shows how deeply ingrained the Chinese government is within the data inside of our country. But, stopping the HHS from transferring information to other countries could also become a major hindrance if you were to migrate to another country. Trump unsuccessfully tried to do this during his term and failed due to the national outrage. Biden’s order seems to be less drastic, so it will most likely be more effective. Biden’s strategy on how to work with China has been much more towards being less of an ally and flexing more power towards the Chinese.
This relates to class because it once again shows a unipolar power being pulled apart by the lower power countries in order to make themselves a more powerful country. This also relates to class because it shows how the Chinese government has had a hand in the United States data and could potentially be affecting the population of the United States.
