Russia and China have become very strong allies and are now collaborating. President Vladimir Putin has expressed Russia’s willingness to collaborate with China in resisting unipolar hegemony. Vladimir Putin also stated that Russia’s economy has recovered from the international sanction that happened because of the war with Ukraine. Putin has also talked about how Russia supports China’s ‘belt and road initiative’ plans. The ‘belt and road initiative’ plan is a form of modernization china has spread to numerous other countries including russia. China has also praised russia saying that they would like to continue working together to expand the global framework.
Russia and China’s partnership is mutually beneficial for both parties. Both are in agreement on how to approach things in the world. Russia also has adopted China’s “belt and road initiative” in order to better modernize russia while still keeping funding for their war against ukraine. The partnership will also prove to prolong the war with ukraine, as China supports russia more and more. With both china and russia collaboration, they have heavy influence in the UN. Russia and china have stated they feel that the world will very soon be in a state of multipolarity once more. The United states might feel threatened by this possibility, which could potentially lead to them doubling down on taiwan’s independence. However, if with the help of china, russia manages to win the war against ukraine, china might feel brave enough to invade taiwan and take it back, this could lead to even more conflict with the united states. The united states is also a part of NATO which means war between the two could have catastrophic consequences for the world as a whole.
In class we have talked about the power system of the current world. This system is currently a monopoly of the united states, everything is done the ‘american way’ because we are the dominant power. China and russia are challenging that in a way which could pose a threat to the united states. So now the united states must think about where they want their foreign policy to draw the line in the expansion of russia and china. If the world does end up becoming multipolar, it would more than likely mark the end of an era, which was also discussed in class.
