On September 15, 2024, the story broke that the nearly two decade imprisoned David Lin was finally released from Beijing prison and allowed to return home to the US. Detained in 2006, and convicted in on the grounds of Contract fraud in 2009, Lin the first one of three known detained American Citinzins to be released from the Beijing prison. The U.S. government claims that all three detainees, including Lin, were detained on bogus charges which is what led to the 20-year battle to have then release. Three weeks prior to Lins release U.S. National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, visited Bejining and reportedly brought up the topic of the detained Americans. Although many thought that little progress had been made as Lin’s scheduled reales was still slated for April 2029.
Seeing that an American Citizen has been brought back home after wrongful detention is fantastic. China and America have traditionally been at odds with each other due to vast differences of opinion on the philosophies of Government. There have been accusations of espionage on both sides, leading to constant talk concerning detained prisoners. Although David Lin’s case is much less exciting, as he was simply a preacher trying to raise funds to help a local church, the Chinese Government’s detention and charge against Lin have always been suspicious. This situation does not help America trust China in its international affairs. China’s release comes when the U.S. government again throws around the idea of banning TikTok, a China-based company. It is possible, but highly unlikely, that China is trying to gain good favor with the U.S. as our demographic makes up a large portion of TikTok usage.
China appears to have offered some olive branch to the U.S. by releasing David Lin. It is unclear if this will happen with the two known detainees still in the légala battle, hoping to be returned home. As for the U.S., they may need to send a detainee of theirs. Back to China, especially if they want to regain U.S. citizens. Congress is currently discussing what to do about the two other detainees. The question of priority is also raised for other U.S. citizens who are held abroad. With sailors in Venezuela, A marine in Russia, and other detainees held on suspicious charges, Congress may feel pressured to get the /Chinese detainees back home to glass over the other American prisoners
This situation only involves two state actors. Who also happen to be two of the most prominent state actors in the World. Who also have troubled histories with one another. This is not the end of the road in the complicated relationship between the U.S. and China. While this could be a step toward establishing peace between the two countries, it is unlikely that a diplomatic solution will pop up anytime soon. There was an NGO that played a small part in the situation. Dui Hua is a human rights group based in China that focuses specifically on detainees. They were the most prominent advocate for the release of David Lin.
