On October 18th, 2024 the North Koreans have said they are sending 10,000 troops to fight with Russia in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war according to South Korea’s spy agency. Although around 1500 North Korean troops have been sent to fight the Ukrainians already and more are expected to arrive in the upcoming weeks. This would be the first time during the war any nation has sent troops to fight in the war. With the tensions between the Korea’s, this would further escalate the situation between the countries and the west. It is not known why North Korea has sent troops to assist the Russians as the North lacks modern military equipment and most of it’s equipment is from old soviet era times. This will be the first time the North has fought in a major conflict since the 1950-1953 Korean war. It is unknown how well the North would be prepared to fight or if they are even properly trained to fight the Ukrainians with more advanced equipment supplied by the US and many European countries.
North Korea sending troops to fight in Ukraine is major as this drags another country into the war and if this continues how many countries would be dragged in? It has always been Ukraine-Russia war but now another country is fighting along the Russians. How prepared are the North Koreans to fight in a major war with being a hermit kingdom and not a lot of fighting experience nor do they have as advanced equipment compared to the Ukrainians. The western countries or NATO may intervene to help Ukraine further by providing more equipment due to the North Koreans joining the war. With the North having over a million troops how many more troops would they send to fight in the war and would NATO get involved in this in the future if it escalates even more?
There are 2 major decisions that this could go, one with North Korea sending more troops to fight within the Ukraine-Russian war or NATO an IGO could step in and put troops on the ground which is very unlikely, but possible. The treaty countries that gets dragged in could get countries like South Korea and Japan to join into the conflict if it occurs. The decision made by this is made at the Individual level by Kim Jong Un who decided to send the troops to fight in Russia. This could lead to more sanctions being imposed on Russia or North Korea from the US or EU which is a political IGO. This would also lead to more multinational corporations (MNC) pulling out of these countries which many have already pulled out.
