Taiwan has reported a movement of 14 warships seven military’s aircraft and four balloons nearing their territory between Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. This comes as a continuation of Beijing’s claims to the island country of Taiwan. Chinese aggressions has persisted even through the US having unofficially taken the position of supporting Taiwan. Six of the aircraft have reportedly past the demilitarized zone in the straight of Taiwan according to Taiwan’s defense ministry. These movements are not uncharacteristic as Taiwan’s defense ministry calls these shows of force as pointless in increasing respect for China internationally.
China moving towards forceful annexation of Taiwan is a recurring issue. this move from China. iIt doesn’t come as a shock towards the US or Taiwan but does come as a new development in the relations. Though doesn’t change much seeing as the US hasn’t backed down from unofficially backing Taiwan. On Friday Taiwanese president Lai called on China to refrain from threats and said Beijing’s military exercises “will not be able to win the respect” of neighboring countries. In recent memory Taiwanese president Lia visited 12 countries that they have diplomatic ties with including Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau. His latest stops being in Hawaii and Guam from where he had phone calls with Congress leaders this angered China.
In international relations terms this is showing an unrecognized state dealing with a recognized state where realistically in Taiwan China has no Authority. Though externally and especially with the borders China needs to show that they have sovereignty over Taiwan. Including exercising their powers over the country even if they have no sovereignty inside of their borders they need to show it externally by not recognizing certain borders drawn up by Taiwan. This can lead to issues where countries like the US have pledged to uphold Taiwan’s sovereignty even not officially. This is due to the fact that if they do move military troops into Taiwan than the US has upheld they would get involved.
