Australia gives nearly 50 out-of-date M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine after Kyivs months-long unanswered request, according to Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles. The American-made tanks are valued at 163 million USD, and gave the Australian military the opportunity to replace the tanks with a fleet of 75 new generation M1A2. Months ago, Richard Marles said the Australian government did not plan to donate older tanks to Ukraine, however, more recently, the decision was changed. Marles had told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that they have been talking with the Ukrainian government on how Australia could best support them, and concluded “We look at the material that we have; its effectiveness, … the shape that it’s in, … whether it would be able to make a difference, whether it can be sustained and maintained so that it can be kept in the fight. And the Abrams tanks fit all of those criteria”.

Donation of military equipment is a great way of productively using old equipment while acquiring new equipment. This supply of tanks highlights Australia’s strategic use of defense resources, upgrading to newer M1A2 tanks while ensuring its older equipment remains useful for a country in need. This specific donation demonstrates a significant shift in Australia’s defense policy, showing increased Western support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. It also shows the alignment of Australia with NATO allies, contributing to global efforts to counterbalance Russian military influence.

I believe this act of goodwill from Australia to Ukraine could signify a shift towards more involvement in the western world and NATO. This donation also checks off multiple sub-theories of Liberal Theory. With relative gains triumphing over absolute gains, we can see that Australia isn’t a self-centered realist, but instead wants to help another country for the greater good. Additionally, Australia most likely wouldn’t have acted this way if it didn’t share any similarities with Ukraine, namely being a democratic nation.
