In the early morning hours of December 3rd, 2024 the South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, unexpectedly declared martial law and deployed soldiers around the government building in an attempt to prevent politicians from reaching the building, however in a few hours the lawmakers were able to gather just enough people to hold a quick election, invalidating the presidents declaration of martial law. The whole situation was absurd with his supporters claiming his hand was forced when opponents refused to pass key legislation, while dissidents claimed it was a failed coup, and that he should be arrested. However it came to a head on December 14th when President Yeol was formally impeached and removed from office with Han Duck-soo becoming acting president. On January 3rd it was announced that President Yeol was being investigated by the “Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials” (CIO) for rebellion and treason, charges that could be punishable by death in South Korea. On January 15th, around 1000 South Korean police raided the presidential compound in order to fulfill the outstanding warrant for his arrest, using bolt cutters and climbing over barricades. Yeol has been in police custody now for 48 hours and has been undergoing questioning by the CIO. As the situation is still developing, its uncertain where the case will go from now, and further hearings are planned for February 5th. The way surrounding nations should react to this is with a large amount of caution and should refrain from getting involved until the situation clears up. The general picture that the world stage is getting is that the Right leaning president attempted to declare martial law in order to force a bill through the assembly, however the left leaning opposition managed to break through and shoot down the legislation before it could be passed, however this could all change tomorrow if further news comes out. I would recommend nations waiting for the dominos to fall before making a concrete decision on how to deal with the situation. This event relates to what we are learning in class via the idea of security and stability. The political situation can directly affect the cohesiveness of the Western alliance in the area. If South Korea were to somehow fall into a civil war, it would seriously jeopardize US interests in the area.
