The Philippines have signed a military pact with New Zealand. This allows the two countries to hold joint military exercises in both countries as well as other cooperative activities. The Philippines did this to bolster its alliance portfolio as tensions continue to rise with China over the South China Sea. There was a ceremony in Manila where the treaty was signed. China (shockingly) is not a big fan of The Philippines gaining more military allies. When a similar treaty with Japan was signed, China voiced its opinion, saying it would lead to a Cold War. The Philippines responded, telling them to stop meddling in domestic affairs. Judith Collins, Minister of Defence in New Zealand, stated that the country is “committed to reinvigorating our security relationships” and is working with the Philippines to uphold order in the region. The Philippines are worried that this conflict could end in a trade route restriction in the South China Sea. A deal with Canada is expected to come to fruition soon.

Good on The Philippines for standing up to big brother. The treaty is yet to be ratified by the Philippine Senate, but I don’t see a world where they don’t allow it to pass. Building its alliances is more crucial than ever as its skirmishes with Chinese vessels continue. However, they already have THE ally, that being the United States, so everyone else they partner with just seems less significant. It’s nice to have regional allies, I suppose. It’s strange to hear China’s opinion on where this could lead because a Cold War between The Philippines and China does not seem very likely. Usually, their language is “We will crush you if you continue your aggression”. Maybe they’re finally showing an ounce of respect to its neighbors. I definitely see this ending in trade route restrictions. Only then will the United States intervene.

This relates to class because we can perform geopolitical analysis on this situation. The Philippines and China are not the only countries that want control in the South China Sea. Every neighboring country is jostling for position in the sea because it is rich in resources and is a popular maritime trade route. This also relates to class because it exemplifies reciprocity. The Philippines is offering protection and allowing New Zealand to train with them in their country. In return, New Zealand will give the same.
