In August 2025, Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. declined by 2% from July to 13.94 billion after a 20% U.S. tariff took effect on August 7th. Imports from China also fell by 2% that month. However, year on year, exports to the U.S. rose by 18.3% and from January through August, U.S. bound exports grew 26.4% to $99.05 billion, underscoring the U.S. as Vietnams leading export market. Still, Vietnam remains heavily dependent on Chinese inputs, with imports from China climbing 27% year by year to $117.93 billion over the same period. Economic forecasters, including Oxford Economics, warn of slowdown in export growth due to the tariffs, while the World Bank has downgraded Vietnams 2025 GDP growth from 6.8% to 6.6%. Despite this the Vietnamese government maintains an ambitious growth target of 8.3 to 8.5%, with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressing the need to meet it despite mounting challenges.

In my opinion this article is very interesting because it really highlights how Vietnam relies on the U.S. and China for most of their goods and how the U.S. tariffs are really affecting their economy and imports. This article affects the region by having Vietnam’s progress at being a competitor in low cost manufacturing in the East Asian region get slowed down because of the tariffs. If Vietnam slows down then other countries in the region may begin to replace the country but then they could be hit with tariffs if they produce too much. I think that the tariffs are probably a good call in the East Asian region, but I wonder about why we are using tariffs on our allies because while Vietnam isn’t our closest friend we definitely like them more than China. Also Vietnam doesn’t like China and I would think that we would want to keep it that way and not push Vietnam to import more from China and possibly become allies.

Vietnam could respond to these tariffs by buying from different countries in the region like China or India. They could also keep importing goods from the U.S. and try to improve their GDP as was mentioned by their Prime Minister. The U.S. could respond to these events by not putting tariffs on goods to countries we would like to keep as allies. China could respond to these tarrifs by exporting to countries all around East Asia by selling cheaper goods which would make them more dominant in the region then they already are.

This event connects to class because we talked about the tariffs Trump imposed on the world. The tariffs are a form foreign policy which are actions made by a state internationally.
