A fragile ceasefire is holding between Thailand and Cambodia after July’s deadly border crisis that killed over 40 people, but tensions still remain between the two countries. The dispute focuses on contested territory which is fueling nationalism on both sides. In Cambodia, social media campaigns have created boycotts of Thai goods with some shops even covering barcodes on Thai products. In Thailand, influencers like Tae Achiwa are stoking the fire of anti-Cambodian sentiment by targeting migrant workers, he claimed his actions led to more than 20 people being deported. Violence has escalated, with a Cambodian father and son attacked by Thais that claimed they acted patriotically. While some Thais condemn those actions, fear and hostility still continue to grow. At least 30,000 Cambodian workers have left Thailand, highlighting the human cost of conflict that is still far from resolved even though there has been a ceasefire.

I think the article is very interesting in the fact that it gives us both sides of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. It also fascinates me how the population of both sides are fighting each other on social media. Historically Thailand and Cambodia have always had border disputes with one another over what land is theirs. The tension that led to this really started in early 2025 when there were patrol clashes at the border in the Preah Vihear Temple region. After these clashes came out to the public many social media campaigns started. In July 2025, an armed fight broke out that killed 40 people. Both sides blamed each other with no clear idea of who started the fight. This could have a lasting impact on the region because depending on what measures these countries go to they could go to war which would affect millions of civilian lives in the area and the war would continue for a while because of the geography that both countries have. I think that the UN should send in UNTSO who are peacekeepers who stand by countries borders and make sure no conflicts break out.

Thailand could respond to this by telling its citizens to stop criticizing the Cambodian government and the Cambodian people and try to work things out diplomatically. Thailand could also send armed troops to the border to prevent any Cambodians from starting anything. Cambodia could respond to this event in almost the same way since we don’t know who started the conflict. Cambodia could send armed troops to the border or try to work things out diplomatically.

This article relates to class because we talked about nation states and both Cambodia and Thailand are nation states. This conflict also might involve the UN soon which is an IGO and we talked about that in class as well.
