Australia’s Defense Ministry reported that a Chinese fighter jet released flares dangerously close to an Australian patrol aircraft conducting surveillance in the South China Sea. The ministry described the maneuver as “unsafe and unprofessional,” though no injuries occured. According to the statement, the Chinese jet fired flares twice during the encounter. In response, China’s Southern Theater Command accused the Australian aircraft of intruding into its airspace, saying its forces lawfully tracked, warned, and expelled the plane. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles reaffirmed that Australia would remain vigilant amid growing regional tensions. The incident mirrors a similar confrontation in February, when a Chinese military aircraft also dropped flares near an Australian plane.

This article is important because of the heightened tensions in the East Asian and Oceanic area right now. Because of the deal just signed between the U.S. and Australia it could have prompted China to feel as if they needed to show their dominance in the region. This event could mean some different things for the region. One, it could all be a show of force by China and they could mean nothing by it or two, China could be starting to really start discouraging any foreign states from coming near their sphere of influence and could be making a push to become a global superpower.

Australia could respond to this event by calling on its allies to bring ships and military presence to the South China Sea to discourage China from furthering their efforts. Australia could also back off of China and watch from a distance and use surveillance planes to gather intel about what China is doing. China could respond to this event by using their power to secure their presence as the sole power of the South China Sea.

This article directly connects to what’s been talked about in class by showing China as a regional power in East Asia by using their power to deter Australia from the South China Sea. This article also relates to security dilemmas because Australia had a patrol aircraft in the South China Sea posed a threat to China and they had to ensure their own security.
