North Korean citizens are being ordered to provide “loyalty payments” while homeless children are being rounded up and put to work in labour camps as the regime increasinglyfeels the bite of international sanctions<\/a>.<\/p>\n Citing sources within North Korea, the Seoul-based Daily NK news website said workers were being told to submit their mandatory contributions earlier than usual on the grounds that the government needs to improve its currency reserves.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, workers were being told they need to make their “donations” early to cover shortages in medical or military supplies.<\/p>\n A source in the Ryanggang district said families of four were “shocked” to discover they were suddenly expected to pay the equivalent of \u00a345, which is about 40 days’ worth of rice or 440lbs of corn.<\/p>\n Reports suggest that the regime’s new drive to get more from the public is causing growing discontent among ordinary people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n D<\/span>aily NK has also reported that “kkotjebi”, the Korean word for homeless children, are being rounded up from markets and train stations and being sent to the newly established Tongrim Orphanage.<\/p>\n While the regime claims the project is a demonstration of its “love for its children”, the orphanage was previously known as the Tongrim Correctional Labour Camp and served as a re-education facility for anyone who expressed dissent against Kim Jong-un’s rule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n P<\/span>revious inmates have been moved to another camp,\u00a0with the children now taking their places in the surrounding fields\u00a0<\/a>until they are old enough to join the military.<\/p>\n North Korean state media has reported that Mr Kim recently convened an extended session of his politburo in order to discuss ways in which the country might reduce\u00a0the impact of international sanctions<\/a>\u00a0imposed as a result of the nation’s nuclear and missile development programmes.<\/p>\n The fact that the issue is being discussed at the highest levels of government strongly suggests that the limits on trade and financing are being felt in Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" www.telegraph.co.uk North Korean citizens are being ordered to provide “loyalty payments” while homeless children are being rounded up and put to work in labour camps as the regime increasinglyfeels the bite of international sanctions.
