Stemming from the original Olympic games in Athens, the underlying theme of Olympic games has always been national unity and pride. The latest communication between the dueling parts of the Korean peninsula to discuss Olympic participation by the North has broken an over two year silence. Recently, the North reopened the line to communicate with South Korea, but it wasn\u2019t until Friday morning that South Korea announced that the North would be participating in high level talks about the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Between this announcement and the agreement between the US and South Korea to delay joint military testing previously scheduled for during the games, I think a lot of necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the athletes. These actions have helped to ease international tensions and calm the nerves of participants. I know if I was an American athlete, I would be a little nervous going to a place in such close proximity to North Korea, but the actions taken would\u2019ve made me less worried. Not only that, but this monumental meeting scheduled for Tuesday also serves as a symbol of possible unity between the people. Hopefully this meeting will go smoothly and tensions between North and South Korea can begin to dissipate and the lines of communication can remain open. <\/span><\/p>\n
