However, this alleged meeting may not be as promising as it appears to be “on paper”.

For starters, the process in which country leaders meet to discuss their relations with one another is usually ceremonial, making this meeting highly unusual, especially for the United States who derives its power from the consent of the governed. The plan for President Trump and Kim Jong-un to meet and come to an agreement themselves will result in the President bypassing the input of the American people and the legislative branch. If the American public is not behind the actions of the President in this meeting, he will have no real power to uphold any agreements. Additionally, President Trump, though skilled in the art of creating deals, is limited in diplomatic experience. For this reason, Kim Jong-un would have a distinctive advantage over the President as he has more experience in the political sphere. Furthermore, the discussion between the two leaders may result in an inflamed relation with North Korea if an agreement is not created, as the United States will have no other options; the meeting will be their only chance to obtain a peaceful and civil agreement with Kim Jong-un.

The international community is asking North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, which has established its legitimacy and power in the world as well as allowed it to be the forerunner in the political arena for an extended time. For this reason, it is unlikely North Korea will be willing to give up its prized possession without a “fair” and equal trade from the United States. The sanctions imposed on North Korea by the United States are quite possibly noted as a fair trade, as the drop in the sanctions would allow the economy in North Korea to regrow. However, this may not be the deal North Korea is seeking. As a country with military personnel in multiple countries around the world, the United States also has influence in South Korea. Undoubtedly, the presence of the U.S. military in South Korea has allowed for the two countries to remain separated as well has kept peace in that sphere of the world. It has also proven to be a challenger in the agenda of the North Korean government. For this reason, it is highly probable a meeting between the United States and North Korea would uncover the desire for the U.S. military influence to leave Korea in order to rid the country of its nuclear bombs.

I don’t believe the meeting between the leaders should or will occur any time soon as it doesn’t appear to benefit anyone involved. In fact, if the meeting were to occur and North Korea demanded the removal of troops from South Korea in exchange for the removal of their nuclear bombs, the United States would be backed into a very difficult and controversial decision. As the main source of military presence in South Korea, it is crucial that the United States maintain this role. The only way the United States could accept an agreement such as this would be if other countries are willing to take a military presence in the stead of the United States.

President Trump is planning to meet Kim Jong-un face-to-face to discuss future relations between North Korea and the United States.
