{"id":1625,"date":"2018-05-15T14:22:32","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T14:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/eastasiaandoceaniablog\/?p=1625"},"modified":"2018-05-15T14:22:32","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T14:22:32","slug":"north-korea-nuclear-site-shut-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/eastasiaandoceaniablog\/2018\/05\/15\/north-korea-nuclear-site-shut-down\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea nuclear site shut down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/north-korea\">North Korea<\/a>\u00a0has begun dismantling the country\u2019s only known nuclear test site, according to satellite photos, following through on a promise made by leader Kim Jong-un ahead of his meeting with Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The pictures, taken on 7 May, are \u201cthe first definitive evidence that dismantlement of the test site was already well underway\u201d, according to\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.38north.org\/2018\/05\/punggye051418\/\">a blog post by 38 North<\/a>, a website run by former US diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>The Punggye-ri site in the northeast of the country was used for all of the North\u2019s six nuclear tests and lies deep within mountains. Kim pledged to close the complex after his historic meeting with South Korean president Moon Jae-in, saying North Korea no longer needed the site.<\/p>\n<p>There were reports the site had collapsed and was unusable, but Kim himself reportedly dismissed those claims, saying \u201cwe have two more tunnels that are bigger than the existing ones and that they are in good condition\u201d.
