Since the election of their president Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, Taiwan has lost five diplomatic allies, including Burkina Faso, the Dominican Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Panama, and El Salvador, who decided to end relations with Taiwan after refusing to provide financial support for a new port. After El Salvador eventually established new ties with China, Taiwan accused the republic of “luring” its allies away by offering them aid packages. China, however, denied the accusation, and declared that Taiwan should not be allowed to have formal diplomatic ties with any other country. By being both a political and economic powerhouse, I believe that it makes sense for other poorer countries to want to have relations with China. However, just because they have control over Taiwan, I don’t think it’s fair of China to tell them that they don’t have the right to establish foreign relations with other countries, especially when they have been doing it successfully in the past. If anything, this restriction will only fuel Taiwan’s desire to fight for its independence, which would serve as a heavy loss for China. Aware of the hostility China has been showing toward Taiwan since her election, Tsai has decided to maintain the ‘status quo’ by refusing to bow to pressure and continue to push for independence. This approach, however, involves risk, as the situation could easily escalate into an economic, political, and military crisis between the two nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Taiwan, a country still controlled by the Republic of China, has formal ties with a total of 17 countries around the world.
