I learned that Myanmar has a majority of Buddhists and has a significant minority of Muslims. From what I’ve learned, all was relatively well between the two groups until, 1962 there was an uprising of Buddhists who took power. The Buddhists took full control of the government and introduced regulations on citizenship to exclude Muslims. They also began excluding them from government positions and army positions.

Minority issues for the Muslims in Myanmar have only gotten worse. Recently ten Rohingyas, otherwise known as Muslims from Myanmar, were picked out of a crowd and shot dead by military personnel in Myanmar. This is an atrocious act. This is practically genocide. I don’t have a lot of background about this issue in Myanmar or really any history of Myanmar itself but thanks to all my knowledge of the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide I can point out acts of genocide when I hear about them.

Although the article I read about was not only about this mass shooting of ten Rohingyas. It was about two Reuter journalists who were jailed in Myanmar for trying to cover the mass shootings as they were taking place. Myanmar’s government claims the journalists were encroaching on internal affairs that they had no business in. Now I don’t know the freedoms of the citizens of Myanmar, but if a court claims your freedom of speech has “no business in this country”, I know that whole bunch of countries are going to want to get involved to protect those freedoms. This article mentions how countless journalists flooded the streets of Myanmar, protesting their right to uncover the truth and their freedom of speech. I wish the US covered more stories and current events such as this, because not only should we keep informed, but we should also acknowledge and bring to light the countries who aren’t as powerful and as successful as us, just because we’re all people at the end of the day and human rights should be given to all.

When searching for current events to post about Eastern Asia, I read various articles, such as the Typhoon that hit in the Philippines and all its effects, to the economic affairs of China, to the denuclearization of North Korea. Although one article that really got my attention was one regarding the imprisonment of two Reuter journalists in Myanmar.

[1

post-1857","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-analysis
["GET
