A recent survey has revealed that\u00a0President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is considered to be more religious\u00a0than his challenger in the 2019 presidential election, Prabowo Subianto.<\/p>\n
A survey commissioned by Indikator Politik Indonesia\u00a0polled 1,220 respondents from Sept. 1 to 6, asking them about their views on the two\u00a0presidential candidates.<\/p>\n
In terms of personal branding, 76 percent of the\u00a0respondents consider Jokowi to be\u00a0religious and pious, while\u00a058 percent say Prabowo is religious and pious.<\/p>\n

\u201cJokowi has, since last year, successfully portrayed himself as a religious person.\u00a0He has\u00a0frequently\u00a0visited\u00a0ulama<\/em>,\u00a0kyai\u00a0<\/em>[religious teachers] and religious figures across the country,\u201d Indikator executive director Burhanuddin Muhtadi said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Since early\u00a0last year, Jokowi has\u00a0made many visits\u00a0to Islamic boarding schools, mostly across Java, and met with senior religious figures from various Muslim groups in different regions.<\/p>\n In April, Jokowi also invited representatives of the self-proclaimed 212 Rally Alumni group, which comprises groups and activists who participated in nonviolent\u00a0protests in 2016 to call for the prosecution of then-Jakarta governor Basuki \u201cAhok\u201d Tjahaja Purnama, an ally of Jokowi, over\u00a0blasphemy.<\/p>\n Burhanuddin said Jokowi\u2019s running mate Ma\u2019ruf Amin, a prominent Muslim cleric, also contributed to the\u00a0newfound religious branding, though it was not the main factor.<\/p>\n Eighty-two percent of respondents said Ma\u2019ruf was religious and pious, while 63 percent said the same for Prabowo’s running mate,\u00a0Sandiaga Uno.<\/p>\n Jokowi has been labeled as anti-Islam and pro-communist\u00a0by hard-line groups, while Prabowo is portrayed as pro-Islam because he is a longtime ally of the Islam-based\u00a0Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and\u00a0close to the Muslim conservative groups that were behind the 212 rally.<\/p>\n Burhanuddin said\u00a0Jokowi and Prabowo represented different Muslim blocks with different perspectives.<\/p>\n \u201cFor example, PAN [National Mandate Party] and PKS [Prosperous Justice Party] represent modernist Muslim groups. That\u2019s why such groups throw support behind Prabowo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) senior politician Maruarar Sirait acknowledged that the anti-Islam image\u00a0associated with Jokowi was of\u00a0concern for\u00a0the Jokowi camp, saying that the decision to pair Jokowi with Ma\u2019ruf, an influential Muslim cleric, was a way to address the issue.<\/p>\n \u201cWe hope that people can engage in constructive discussions [on issues] such as economic problems, rather than sectarian issues,\u201d he said.
