The decision to delay the Prince’s crowning proves to say that the citizens are not yet over the king, and do not approve of the heir. In fact, rather than their prime minister and Legislative National Assembly immediately naming the next ruler, they held a nine minute silence in respect to King Bhumibol and went home. Bangkok announced a one year period for mourning in which people are suspected to wear black and it’s Lese Majeste law will be particularly strict. Tourists have already been warned of Thailand’s state and take caution. An entire year dedicated to mourning a king puts strain on the government to appropriately transition an entire nation.

The hesitation to announce and officially crown the prince could mean that Thailand is not satisfied with their constitutional monarchy and could possibly reform in order to elect their Head of State. Such a movement would be pushed off for an extended period of time and the most plausible forecast is the prince being crowned. But will the people be happy with a ruler that is unprepared and reportedly impulsive? While his position only lends limited constitutional powers, the precedence that his respected father set changed the course of Thailand’s politics through his popularity. The new Head of State now has some “left-over power” that could influence and change policy.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn is unpopular in the eyes of the people due to their limited knowledge, albeit the monarchy is protected from public view, and his divergence from traditional customs. Reportedly he has been married three times, has disowned 4 children he had from one wife, and spends much of his time abroad. A ruler who is not familiar with his country and people is generally unfit to rule.

The death of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol, and the successive nomination of Prince Vajiralongkorn, has sent the nation into instability and discourse.
