Australia is not the first country to make this move. The United States also moved their Israeli embassy to Jerusalem in May, rupturing decades of agreement on Jerusalem as a two state area between the Israelis and Palestinians. However, not much progress has been made on Morrison’s intentions. Although under consideration by the Australian government and gratefully recognized by the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu (he tweeted, “He informed me that he is considering officially recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel & moving the Australian embassy to Jerusalem. I’m very thankful to him for this.”), opposing political parties in Australia are calling Morris out, saying he is making promises because he is so “desperate to hang onto his job, he is prepared to say anything if he thinks it will win him a few more votes.” As the article says, “the surprise announcement came just days before a crucial parliamentary by-election in a heavily Jewish Sydney constituency where the candidate for Morrison’s Liberal party, a former ambassador to Israel, is trailing in opinion polls.” Morris is also rejecting any claims that he is under pressure to recognize Jerusalem from the US government. “I have made this decision without any reference to the United States,” he said. “It has not come up in any discussion that I have had with the president or officials.”

I think that regardless of Morris’s intentions, recognizing Jerusalem is a huge deal for the future of Israel- this would validate the long-disputed territory as belonging to Israel, but it would also mean breaking the two-state contract and further tensions between the two groups. Foreign recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would change the future of the Israel-Palestine conflict, for better or for worse. Although nothing is final yet, I’m sure that this proposal will be a controversial topic in the global community due to the religious and territorial issues surrounding Jersusalem. Since the United States and Australia have already made steps towards the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, more countries will most likely follow suit and take either the side of the Israelis or Palestinians.

During a recent press conference, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced his plans to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
