The Philippines are very susceptible to natural disasters such as typhoons. Which is why for the most part, the defense against them are pretty strong. However, the typhoon that struck was too strong. Thousands of people are forced to relocate because the storm had torn up their homes and flooded the streets. The Philippines is the first major landmass on the Pacific Ocean typhoon belt. Most of the island is protected by various mountain ranges that can protect the island. However, the smaller islands of the Philippines don’t have any natural protection which is why they are the ones that receive more devastating hits than anywhere else in the Philippines. The last deadly storm surge in Tacloban had hit in 1887. This was a devastating disaster because the government was not able to communicate with the citizens and warn them about the the typhoon that was going to hit them.

The Philippines are known to struggle with poverty. One in five people earn less than two dollars a day. Most people struggle to live on such low income and could also result into low quality housing. Many of the victims built their homes on the islands and lived off of fishing and farming. Since so many people live off of that that means the typhoon can cause even more damage because it could wipe out entire farms, leaving some families with no source of income anymore. It destroyed or damaged 1.14 million houses, many of them made of cheap, flimsy materials that stood no chance against nature’s wrath. However, local governments failed to evacuate many of the people away from danger zones. This is a major problem because since the government had not evacuated their people to safety, they had put all of those lives in danger. The government needs to protect their people by making these islands stronger in regards to the defense against natural disasters. If governments were to pay more attention to problems that impact their entire country and install better protection and communication services it could really benefit their country.

More than 7,000 people are thought to have lost their lives in the Philippines’ worst storm on record.
