Despite its name, the South China Sea belongs to several Southeast Asian countries, not just China. Together, ASEAN and China have been creating a “code of conduct” to manage the crucial international trade routes. At the annual summit of ASEAN in Singapore, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said “We have found a way to properly manage and defuse differences, for example, on the issue of the South China Sea in the past years,” and hopes to have a final agreement in the next 3 years. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte claims that the only conflict over the South China Sea is between Western nations and China, since the relations of the Southeast Asian states are “excellent.” He also mentions that a code of conduct was still necessary so there isn’t any “serious miscalculation.” ASEAN first decided to create a code of conduct in 2002, but not much has been done until recently to resolve the issue.

I think it’s really important that something is done to resolve the conflict in the South China Sea. From a geopolitical standpoint, the South China Sea is one of the most important regions in the International Community today. The combination of natural resources, Chinese artificial islands, and heavy commercial traffic has created a lot of conflict in the South China Sea since 2002, when ASEAN first decided a code of conduct must be created to keep peace. Although a code of conduct should help maintain peace in the area, it will probably not resolve the current tension between the U.S. and China in the South China Sea. The U.S. has been sending destroyers through the sea, which China sees as a threat to its national security. Between that and the trade war, there will still be a lot of conflict in the area. However, the code of conduct should be a good step to creating more peace in the South China Sea.

With all the tension in the South China Sea over the past decade, China and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) have been working together to come up with a peaceful solution to the controversy over the disputed area.
