Five returned in 2002. The other 12 remain unaccounted for.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A North Korean representative said on Tuesday that Pyongyang firmly rejects Japan&#8217;s position.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The representative said Japan often raises the abduction issue as a way of influencing domestic politics.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The North Korean official said Japan had itself committed crimes of sexual slavery, referring to those known as comfort women.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Japanese delegate responded that Japan humbly accepts the historical facts of World War Two, and has contributed to the peace and prosperity of the Asia Pacific region and the world.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The North Korean official also asked that economic sanctions on the country be lifted. The official said women, children, and people with disabilities are suffering badly, and are being deprived of basic human rights.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The North&#8217;s remarks follow last month&#8217;s second summit between the leaders of the US and North Korea.
