Now, in Indonesia, protests, that have turned into riots, are taking place against the new law and other laws their parliament is in the process of passing. The protests first began with people gathering in the streets of the capital and other major cities; they were chanting, yelling, throwing up signs, etc… However, over the past couple of days, the protesters have turned into rioters and over 20,000 police troops have been sent into the middle to try and control them. They have used guns, bats and other severe weapons like tear gas. The police’s job is to keep everything under control without turning to abusive methods, however, in the articles I have read, they seemed to have turned towards that right away. Already two students have died in the riots, one to fatal bullet wounds of a policeman. My previous analysis post, I wrote about how I felt that there was a high chance of the law passing smoothly because the majority of Indonesia is muslim and already follow and base their life on their deities rules. I forgot to involve the younger generation which social media and technology influence more than the older generations. The law will affect them more since because of social media they are a lot more involved with other countries laws and culturally different lives. This will limit their freedom which is what they want and will continue to fight for until parliament reaches all of their demands. Their protests have already worked; parliament has delayed and rescheduled their meeting for in the next coming week till the protests die down or they all come to a compromise. Indonesians are recognizing that their country is pulling farther and farther away from a democracy and fear that Indonesia will fall back into the era of New Order, where a 32 year rule of a president used military force to maintain tight control and opposition on the country. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
In my last analysis post I discussed Indonesia’s plan to pass a new law outlawing sex before marriage.
