{"id":3713,"date":"2019-10-17T01:14:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T01:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/eastasiaandoceaniablog\/?p=3713"},"modified":"2019-10-17T01:21:34","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T01:21:34","slug":"dark-web-child-abuse-hundreds-arrested-across-38-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/eastasiaandoceaniablog\/2019\/10\/17\/dark-web-child-abuse-hundreds-arrested-across-38-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Dark web child abuse: Hundreds arrested across 38 countries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 300 people have been arrested following the take-down of one of the world&#8217;s &#8220;largest dark web child porn marketplaces&#8221;, investigators said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site had more than 200,000 videos which had collectively been downloaded more than a million times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was shut down last year after a UK investigation into a child sex offender uncovered its existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on Wednesday, officials revealed that 337 suspected users had been arrested across 38 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US officials unsealed nine indictments against the site&#8217;s owner Jong Woo Son, 23, from South Korea \u2013 where he is currently in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK&#8217;s National Crime Agency said arrests had been made in the UK, Ireland, America, South Korea, Germany, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic and Canada &#8211; among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-48379983\">Fifty children saved as paedophile ring busted<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-47279256\">Child abuse images being traded via secure apps<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site, named Welcome to Video, was run from South Korea and had nearly eight terabytes of content involving child abuse &#8211; the UK&#8217;s National Crime Agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was taken down by an international task force that included agencies from the UK, the US, South Korea and Germany after operating for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was discovered during an investigation into paedophile Matthew Falder from England, who was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-45875275\">jailed for 25 years for sharing abuse tips and images on the dark web<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-birmingham-42921977\">How global taskforce caught UK paedophile<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the UK, seven men have already been convicted in connection with the investigation, including Kyle Fox who was jailed for 22 years last March for the rape of a five-year-old boy and who appeared on the site sexually abusing a three-year-old girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suspects were identified after crime agencies traced the site&#8217;s cryptocurrency transactions back to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 23 children have been rescued from active abuse situations, the joint task force said at a press conference about the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/images\/ic\/720x405\/p05yq17m.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Media captionVictim of Matthew Falder: &#8220;I don&#8217;t speak to my family anymore&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are continuing to trace other children seen in the videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Dark web child sex offenders&#8230;cannot hide from law enforcement,&#8221;
