Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen and China’s State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi both attended the signing ceremony yesterday. Hun Sen was quoted saying that this trade deal is exciting for Cambodia because it will provide benefits both politically and economically. Wang Yi believes that this trade deal will help Cambodia with the struggles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Cambodia is the first stop on China’s southeast Asia tour. This reflects their past supportive relationship and demonstrates their desire to work on development goals. Wang Yi says that Cambodia has done a fantastic job in dealing with the pandemic, and that China will stand with Cambodia, no matter how the international spectrums change. Cambodia appreciates China’s support, and will in turn support China in mutually beneficial interactions.

China and Cambodia’s good relationship is not surprising in my opinion. China and Cambodia are close in proximity, and both want to have the benefits of trade and unifying power. I think a lasting impact of the trade deal could be a final, permanent relationship between the two countries. Because China is going on a “southeast Asia tour” it is likely that China is tying to improve their relationship with the whole area in general, trying to gain some sort of personal benefit. If we consider the location, you can notice that the southeastern asian countries have sea ports to the Gulf of Thailand, the Andaman sea, and the bay of Bengal, which China would probably love to have access to in order to trade through those areas. This could be an incentive for China to build and improve relationships in the area.

The cause of this event is more multi-faceted, rather than a direct cause and effect. China is close to Cambodia, China and Cambodia have similar interests, China wants access to sea ports, Cambodia wants to have a better relationship to china to achieve better developmental goals. These are all reasons why the trade deal was drawn. A question that could be discussed is, does china actually want to have a good relationship with Cambodia and others or do they just want the benefits? The answer is unclear. One could argue that for all countries and relationships, the sole reason for interaction is for a benefit to their own country, politically or economically. Another could argue that there is a mixture of personal benefit and moral reasoning behind these relationships. For example, that China morally cares about Cambodia’s development, but also wants the personal benefits. Like I mentioned, the answer is unclear and can be determined differently by everyone.

Article Link Yesterday, China and Cambodia signed a free trade deal.
