This was a move by the Trump administration to apply further pressure on Beijing over the national security law it imposed on Hong Kong in June. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Wang Wenbin slammed the US for what he called blatant interference in the internal affairs of China and Hong Kong, as well as a severe violation of international law and the basic norms of intercountry relations. Wang claimed the mainland government had helped the city build a legal system necessary to safeguard national security, which was under threat and seriously damaged in Hong Kong. “China therefore strongly opposes and condemns [the US’ move],” Wang said. “We urge the United States to stop interfering with Hong Kong affairs and withdraw the so-called sanctions immediately. Do not go too far on the wrong road.”

The US is yet again getting involved in China’s international affairs. And yet again, in response to the US getting involved in their affairs, China threatens them. This is a continuous cycle that has been going on between the US and China for decades. They keep implementing sanctions, raising and lowering tariffs and threatening each other. These things are important because sanctions cause tensions to rise between the nations and the tariffs affect trading which affects not only both countries’ economies, but their allied economies as well. Who knows what is going to happen between the US and China, but with tensions only getting worse, it can’t be good.

This goes into one of the big questions that has been debated in not only class, but in politics as well. Should the US continue to get involved in international affairs? In my opinion yes, it is what helps keep us as a superpower. Should we have meddled in this international affair? I don’t know, I don’t know enough about it to be able to give my own personal opinion. But the US does not meddle for no reason so obviously whatever China is implementing in Hong Kong can not be good for democracy, therefore the US should get involved.

Link to Article: https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/politics/article/3109208/hong-kong-deputy-leader-condemns-united-states-barbaric The Trump administration imposed a new round of sanctions against the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese officials.
