In Tokyo, many people working in small businesses have recently lost their jobs due to the increase in Covid cases. Ultimately, many people are going homeless and jobless. In response to this, the Tokyo Metropolitan government in providing free hotel rooms until January 19th, to help citizens get back on their feet. This is no the first time the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has done something like this. When Covid was having the first spike in cases, the same offering was made to those who lost their jobs because of Covid. This original free hotel offering was made between April and June, and had about 1250 applicants. As the new year approaches, experts say that anxiety over Covid will continue as there are fewer jobs during the new year.

I believe that Japan is once again setting a strong example of how to respond to the Virus. In comparison to the U.S, the Japanese method of response to those hit hard by Covid I feel is much more effective. Instead of just throwing money at ever citizen, the Japanese are establish the necessary help needed to help people get back on their feet. The U.S is making the wrong decision easy by giving everyone money. There were actually very few people who put their stimulus check towards goods and supplies. Japans method of giving people a place to stay, gives them enough time to secure a new job and a new place to live. On top of this, Japans method keeps people from being homeless on the street, which further prevents the spread of Covid.

In class, we have discussed the effectiveness of having a democratic government vs a different type of government. Specifically, this article makes me think about democratic peace theory. If the neighbors of Japan (north/south Korea) were all communist then they may be extremely vulnerable to an attack. However, because democracies don’t fight each other, they do not have to fear of a total takeover/invasion from its neighbors.

As the pandemic continues to rage across the world, individual countries and cities are also making different attempts in order to combat the issues coming up because of the virus.
