British National (Overseas) passport holders in Hong Kong are now eligible to submit visa applications to the United Kingdom. Those individuals who are able to secure a visa will apply for settlement after five years and British citizenship a year later. The UK predicts approximately 300,000 of the 2.9 million eligible applicants to utilize this offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The special visa was a response to a security law placed on Hong Kong by China that the UK felt violated the Sino-British Joint Declaration. This declaration originally allowed China to gain Hong Kong from the UK and secured freedom of assembly, speech, and press for the population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This decision is likely going to strain the relationship between the UK and China. China doesn\u2019t like the UK interfering with what they perceive to be domestic affairs and the UK dislikes the disrespect towards their past agreement. This could be problematic for the Chinese government, and as a result they have already rejected BNO passports as valid identification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In connection with class, Hong Kong is an alternative state. Hong Kong doesn\u2019t recognize themselves as being Chinese because they still hold British ideals; however, they are not sovereign and are under Chinese rule. Cultural and economic differences consistently separate Hong Kong from mainland China and those who live in Hong Kong generally do not want to be under an authoritarian government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason this is relevant is because this visa interferes with Chinese control. China does not want to lose Hong Kong, as that would demonstrate weakness in their communist system. In addition, it is worrisome for the population of Hong Kong that the declaration securing their freedoms may be at risk, further separating them from China.
