The recent legislation is concerning Japan because it could be used to rationalize the targeting of Japanese vessels. The Senkaku Islands are protected under the Japan-US Security Treaty meaning that in case of conflict, the US would have to defend Japan. China was unhappy with this declaration, still claiming these islands to be the sovereign territory of China.

Geopolitically, both Japan and China have an interest in the Senkaku Islands. The land itself may not be extremely valuable, but it provides a strategic advantage in terms of sea control. By China making yet another claim on this territory, the country is threatening its relationship with Japan.

As discussed in class, this is important because it could lead to conflict between the United States and China. The US would back Japan in this situation, which could lead to dangerous warfare.

The global system is complicated in the modern world; there is a debate on whether the US is still filling the post Cold-War role as hegemon or if China shares the power in a bipolar system. The two are showing signs of trying to prove their dominance. According to the principle of offshore balancing, the US should intervene to put down the emerging power that is China but should allow Japan to do the heavy lifting as much as possible.

This conflict should be monitored in the upcoming months, especially given two powerful states with nuclear weapons may possibly have to engage in warfare.

Article: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/02/03/national/china-senkakus-east-china-sea-katsunobu-kato/ After a video meeting to discuss maritime issues, Japanese officials expressed their concerns to Chinese officials in regards to the new legislation that allows the Chinese coast guard to use military force in their shared waters. China claims that the uninhabited Senkaku Islands located in the East China Sea are part of their territory; however, Japan currently holds… Read more »

[1

post-4361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-analysis
["GET
