Believing that Taiwan’s actions are a result of foreign provocation, China has in turn increased their own military presence in the Taiwan Strait. Chinese officials cited such actions as ‘necessary to preserve sovereignty and national security’. President Tsai Ing-wen has stated that he will not be coerced by Chinese intimidation and will continue to defend the island’s freedom and democracy.

The US has reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan; US-Taiwanese relations have improved with the augmentation in arms trading and diplomatic relations. China has repeatedly stated that preserving its claim on Taiwan is its most sensitive issue regarding relations with the United States. The recent display of military presence in the South China Sea as part of Washington’s support for Taiwanese independence has further strained relations with Beijing.

Chinese threats of escalating to war is likely a message to external influences such as the United States, who has shown steadfast support for the states of southeast Asia and around the South China Sea in order to curb China’s complete dominance over the region. Taiwan is a geopolitically strategic location for the US, with its prime location in the South China Sea being ideal for US trade. Official US policy recognizes Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China. However, regardless of official policy, increased US naval presence could continue to provoke China into taking more direct action against Taiwan. As China continues to dominate the South China Sea and work on the Belt and Road initiative, it is unlikely they will easily give up Taiwan to its major competitor, the United States.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/28/china-warns-taiwan-independence-means-war Following an increase in military activity in the South China Sea surrounding the democratic island of Taiwan, China warns that a movement towards independence will be taken as an act of war.
