The charges against Aung San Suu Kyi were filed under the Disaster Management Law, a law which is known to be ‘notoriously vague’ and has been used to imprison political prisoners under the former military regime. The military justified its seize of power on the proven-false claims of election fraud by the National League for Democracy, which is Aung San Suu Kyi’s party. The United Nations has spoken out to condemn the military’s actions, calling for the release of all political prisoners, and for the return of rule of law in Myanmar. The G7 has also called for the end of the state of emergency, and for the restoration of democracy.

Opposition to the military regime has begun in the form of civil disobedience; hospital staffs have stopped work or worn red ribbons as a show, and other people of Myanmar banged on pots and pans all night to show opposition. The guess is that the NLD is hoping to lull the military regime leaders into a false sense of security before beginning widespread protests; however, the acts of civil disobedience represent the extreme anger across Myanmar at the coup.

International leaders such as the United States have threatened sanctions against Myanmar, as well as forbidding any further assistance to the state. Close attention is being paid to China, Myanmar’s closest trading partner. China has stated that it ‘noted’ the coup d’etat. The military’s actions have halted Myanmar’s struggling transition to democracy, an endeavor which the US heavily supported. Additionally, the human rights watch activists fear that the coup may worsen conditions for the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The UN is working to address threats to peace and security by working with surrounding states and IGOs like ASEAN. A strong international response condemning the coup is necessary to restore the rule of law in Myanmar.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/2/3/myanmar-police-file-charges-against-suu-kyi-says-document Following a military coup, Myanmar police have detained the overthrown leader Aung San Suu Kyi for illegally imported radios.
