The states expect to see all troops removed from Pangong Lake by this Saturday. The states are insisting that the intention is to decrease tension on the shared border known as the Line of Actual Control.

The border has been disputed for decades. The large numbers of rivers, lakes, and snowcaps allow for the line to shift and bring soldiers face to face fueling further arguments. There has been a mutual agreement for a while to not use guns or explosives on the border, but recent altercations and ‘fistfights’ have left many dead or injured on both sides.

This is important as it speaks to the level of conflict in the region. It is a good sign that troops are being pulled, but tensions are still high and troops lie elsewhere on the border. The military stand-off goes alongside the growing political tension between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Political tension and military intervention is to be feared because these two states have nuclear weapons. India is unlikely to pursue anything too harsh as China is a big trading partner, and a strong economy is the key to maintaining power. It seems that diplomatic relations are currently the ideal solution to this growing problem.

Geopolitically, there are many considerations to be taken into account. One consideration is that China and India both want to gain land along the border in order to expand their sovereign territory because gaining land helps one gain power. In the past, the two countries have fought and then come to an agreement with the cycle repeating. It will be interesting to see if this cycle continues and whether or not it will have significant effects on the region or a true compromise will be reached.

Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56147309 India and China are in the process of withdrawing their troops from a section of the disputed Himalayan border.
