Tai said she was open to a range of options to negotiate and fix circumstances with China, and would not hesitate to act if efforts such as bilateral talks proved ineffective. She stated that she would work to address the Chinese market restrictions that make it difficult or impossible for US competitors to participate in the market. She also plans to make policy that treats censorship as a trade barrier. Tai also said she would work with the Department of Energy and the Department of Agriculture to promote American market access to energy exports.

Trade between China and the US is a very important part of both countries’ economies. In fact, many people speculate that a large reason neither country would attack the other is because of how heavily they rely on each other economically. China and the US are very different in their forms of government, their values, and much more, however they’re still very involved in trade with each other. It seems like Tai is more focused on American improvement, however if a representative were to seek to make trade relations even better, it would be beneficial for both parties as they both benefit heavily from their trade involvement.

The speculation that China and the US refrain from conflict due to their trade involvement heavily supports one of the pillars of liberalism, which is international trade will keep peace. The idea is that if countries are involved with each other with trade, they rely on each other economically. This improves relations between both countries and discourages them from creating conflict with one another. In the relationship between the US and China, it’s definitely visible that they rely on each other in terms of trade, and refrain from conflict, however their trade relationship doesn’t do much for their relationship in other terms.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-biden-trade/bidens-trade-rep-pick-says-she-will-fight-chinese-trade-barriers-including-censorship-idUSKCN2AT3OZ The prospective trade representative that President Biden has chosen, Katherine Tai, said on Monday that she would work to fight many of the “unfair” trade practices from China, as well as try to combat censorship.
