Manila has directed China to remove its vessels from Whitsun Reef, claiming their presence is a direct incursion of Philippine sovereign territory. China’s response was claiming that the vessels were harboring from poor weather, and that the reef is not sovereign territory but actually a part of the hotly contested Spratly Islands. The diplomatic row comes as part of the augmented tensions over claims in the South China Sea; China claims that by the so-called nine-dash rule, it lays claim to the majority of the South China Sea. However, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei also stake much of the South China Sea as being theirs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An international committee affirmed that China’s majority claim to the Sea has no legitimacy, yet they continue to attempt to usurp control over the area, a key geostrategic maritime location. Although the Philippines is beefing up its presence in the South China Sea to ward off Chinese naval ships, the understanding is that any conflict with Beijing would not ultimately benefit them in any way. China, the most prolific economic player in the region, is attempting to expand its economic sphere of influence into the South China Sea more-so than before. Its aggressive, expansionist foreign policy is focused on asserting itself in geostrategic locations, of which the Whitsun Reef is one. the United States has criticized China for attempting to intimidate other smaller Asian states through its presence in other sovereign territories. Despite the diplomatic row between the Philippines and China, being that China is an extremely powerful actor, the Philippines is not willing to make concrete moves and go against them. This is interesting to note because it may open the door for China to decisively take action and overtake the South China Sea in the future. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/south-asia\/philippines-deploys-more-navy-ships-to-disputed-sea-amid-row-with-china\/articleshow\/81689858.cms The Philippine military deployed more naval ships to the South China Sea amidst a diplomatic face-off with China regarding a highly disputed reef.
