In addition, Beijing would be responsible for putting up a majority of the city’s Legislative Council members, giving the federal government greater control. This action comes following huge pro-democracy protests in the semi-autonomous city-state, as China works to solidify its total dominance over the protesting region. China’s efforts at dismantling Hong Kong’s democracy were officially set in motion following the wave of mass protests in 2019, which had widespread implications on the financial hub. In reaction to the 2019 protests, the National People’s Congress passed a sweeping national security law, the terms of which are vague and have been used to jail dozens of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. Pundits say the passage of the new plan is the “final nail in the coffin” for Hong Kong’s democracy.

Beijing’s ability to monitor and veto Hong Kong candidates effectively gives them the power to remove any pro-democracy politicians. This new act comes as a direct contradiction to China’s committance to the “1 country 2 systems” rule in regards to Hong Kong’s democratic pillars and autonomy, established after it reverted from British colonial rule in 1997. China is making moves to stamp out anti-nationalist sentiments in a fight for power and complete dominance, extending beyond the borders of just their own country. The passage of the veto act, in addition to the arresting of democratic activists, has brought upon international scrutiny and criticism, specifically from the West. The United States has spoken out against China’s efforts to diminish Hong Kong autonomy, calling it a situation of rights abuses. The US is actively working towards rallying allies to collectively condemn not only the situation in Hong Kong, but China’s extreme human rights abuses in Xinjiang against Uighur Muslims. However, the major action the US would take is sanctions against China, curtailing its massive economic power (an action which the US has failed to do for the past two decades, while China has rapidly grown). However, it is unclear whether or not sanctions would elicit any real result, as the Chinese economy is mobilized on an international scale; it will be interesting to gauge whether or not international actors will have any real influence on restoring democracy in Hong Kong, as China continues to dominate and grow far beyond other countries.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/11/china-approves-plan-to-veto-hong-kong-election-candidates China’s parliament has officially moved to change Hong Kong’s electoral system, which includes the power for Beijing to veto Hong Kong election candidates.
