As demonstrations over the death of George Floyd unfold throughout the United States, the K-Pop group has taken it upon itself to ensure that the #whitelivesmatter hashtag isn’t used to amplify the racist messages that usually surround it. To that end, K-Pop fans have been tagging videos of artists performing on stage with the hashtag. Many people have been posting fancams, or close-up videos of a member of a band during a performance. The videos have been followed by messages such as “We don’t stan racism” and “Say no to racism, say yes to fancam.” The move has been met with widespread approval on Twitter, where many users have thanked K-Pop fans for the initiative. (I personally did this myself on Twitter by posting a k-pop fancam with a bunch of racist hashtags to drown out the racist comments and can I just say it was the funniest and best decision I have ever done in my life.)

As the black lives matter movement was going on during the summer of 2020, many racist comments and videos were coming out with people trying to stop or diss the black lives matter movement. With k-pop fans deciding to drown out those comments on Twitter in a timely manner, it helped stop people with racist intentions to use a social media platform to do harm.

With the help of globalization pushing the message to stop racism around the world, thousands of people took it upon themselves to try to stop some of the racist comments from coming out. Sometimes globalization can do harm but in this instance, it did good to many people.

Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/k-pop-fans-twitter-whitelivesmatter-hashtag-racist-a9546866.html By flooding a racist hashtag on Twitter with clips of their favorite artists, K-Pop fans have helped drown out racist comments about the black lives matter movement going in June of 2020.
