The neighboring country, Thailand, has allegedly pushed back everyone fleeing, forcing them back into Myanmar. Now, 2,009 people are internally displaced and hiding in the jungle.

Myanmar is in the middle of a worsening crisis. On February 1st, the military seized power in a coup and forced out the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, a military crackdown killed at least 114 people and another 14, including children and young people, were shot dead by Myanmar security forces. Following these events are the recent airstrikes, where the country’s military jets carried out a bombing raid on villages controlled by an ethnic armed group. Another 10 people have been killed, who had been hiding in Thailand’s borders. The total death toll in Myanmar currently adds up to 510.

The governor of Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province, Thichai Jindaluang, denied that any refugees were being pushed back. A member of Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has stated, “Those reports cite information solely from non-official sources without confirming the facts from official sources on the ground which affirmed that no such pushback took place.” In addition, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has said that his government did not want refugees to cross the border but were preparing for a potential influx.

This article is important because forcibly sending people back into a conflict zone is against international refugee law, and despite the government’s denials, several human rights groups have criticized the Thai authorities. Also, armed rebel groups have been fighting the Myanmar military on and off for the past 70 years in the ethnic states of the country, but since the February 1st coup, fighting has increased.

This article relates to what we’ve been learning in class because the Southeast Asia region is an ethnic and cultural shatterbelt. This dates back to the Cold War when revolutionary struggles ended decades of colonialism. Myanmar is deeply internally divided, under persistent stress, and collapsing under aggressive rivals. A step towards peace and stability in Myanmar is the small, but growing number of pro-democracy activists, who are heading into the jungles where they are receiving combat training from ethnic militias.

Link to article: https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/30/asia/thailand-myanmar-refugees-intl-hnk/index.html After a series of airstrikes carried out by the ruling junta in Myanmar, a military or political group that rules a country after taking power by force, more than 2,000 people are attempting to flee the country.
