The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen told emissaries visiting the United States regarding Joe Biden’s request on April 15th, that the island would work with the United states to demobilize “adventurous manoeuvres and provocations” amid threats from Chinese military activities. Ms Tsai also told the US delegtion during a meeting at the Presidential Office that Chinese military activities in the region have threatened regional stability and peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former US Senator Chris Dodd and former Deputy Secrearies of State Richard Armitage and James Steinberg, are visiting the nation to signal Biden’s commitement to Twaiwan and recognizing its democracy. Mr Dodd told Ms Tsai that the current Biden administration would be Taiwan’s “reliable, trusted friend,” one that will help the island expand and support its invenstment in self defence. He also stated that the US partnership with Taiwan is “stronger than ever”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, China announced that it would begin five days of live-fire drills off China’s coast facing Taiwan. Mr Chiu will meet with the visiting Americans, one which the White House called a “personal signal” of the president’s commitment to Chinese-claimed Taiwan. China stated on Wednesday that the US officials with Ms Tsai “will only exacerbate the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

US intervention in Taiwan and the South China Sea will further strain Sino-US relations, however it can be inferred that US interference is an effort to further limit China’s rising power within the region. It is in the US’s, as well as Taiwan’s best interest to put restrictions on China as it attempts to expand its international space. The continuing, strengthening alliance between Taiwan and the United States further signifies the countries disaproval of China’s military in the South China Sea.
