It is a sleek 21-meter-long (69 feet) high-speed Maglev train that is capable of reaching speeds up to 620 kilometers (385 miles) per hour. The train runs on high-temperature suprconducting power that makes it seem like the train is floating on the magnetized tracks. In addition to the train, university researchers also constructed 165 meters (541 feet) of train track in order to demonstrate how the train would look and feel in transit.

The vice president of Southwest Jiatong University (which worked on the prototype), Professor He Chuan, told reporters that the train could operate within 3-10 years. He also stated, “Sichuan has rich rare earth resources, which is very beneficial to our construction of permanent magnet tracks, thus promoting the faster development of experiments.” The country’s first high-speed Maglev train- running at a top speed of 431 kph- began operating in 2003. It connects the Shanghai Pudong Airport and Longyang Road on the eastern side of Shanghai. The nation is known to have the world’s largest high-speed rail network which stretches over 37,000 kilometers.

Last year, China unveiled a new 174-kilometer high-speed railway line which connects Beijing with Zhangjiakou- the 2022 Winter Olympics host city. The railway would cut the travel time from previous 2-3 hours to 47 minutes. Earlier this month, China also introduced a bullet train specifically designed to run/withstand freezing temperatures. The CR400AF-G train can run up to 350 kilometers per hour in weather as cold as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. This train will run routes between Harbin, Beijing, and Shenyang.

China’s recent prototype showcases the country’s economic as well as technological advancements. The nation’s booming and rising economy allows for the country to come up with/ invest in such advancements. Will China lead the world in modern advancements such as high speed trains and self driving cars. Of course with climate change becoming a more prevelant/discussed issue, it will be important that while countries are developing their own personal inventions, they must be benefitial to the climate- a.k.a electric/battery powered forms of transportation, solar and wind, etc.

Link to Article: https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/china-high-speed-maglev-train-intl-hnk/index.html The prototype was unveiled to the media on January 13 in the city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
