The Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin posted on Twitter that the Chinese “really are fishing everything in the water that belongs by law to us.” Both Japan and the United States are taking the side of the Philippine government. The Philippine government claims that each of the 240 ships can catch one ton of fish per day in these waters. The Chinese ships are not only taking the fish but are also a threat to other ships in the area. The Chinese have ignored these claims, however in the past have claimed that these waters belong to them and have also claimed that their ships take shelter in these waters from rough seas. The current Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, has both criticized the US foreign policy and has tried to improve ties with China, but the aggressive fishing by China has put the President in a tough spot. The Philippines have deployed three more naval ships to the area so that they can stand their ground with their territory.

This is an issue not only with the Chinese acting as if they can come into the Philippine territorial waters, but also taking so many fish from these waters. The extreme overfishing by removing 240 tons of fish per day in a small area will have significant impacts on the ecosystems in the region not only in the short term, but in the long term as well. We have seen this happen in other ecosystems as well. For example, the over harvesting of whales had them on the brink of extinction. My grandfather tells the stories of how deer had to be reintroduced into Pennsylvania because so many of them were killed by the early settlers. The upset of the ecosystem will have impacts beyond the numbers of fish in the area, but also to the water quality and the other animals in the region. China does not appear to have the same concerns about the planet as others do.

The Chinese are extremely aggressive in many areas and the rest of the world needs to be concerned. This is not their first time overfishing in water that is not theirs. The Chinese government needs to be watched by the rest of the world and kept in line before they step out of bounds again. The US needs to be more aggressive and take a stand to stop China before they get out of control.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/philippines-files-new-diplomatic-protests-over-chinese-boats-disputed-waters-2021-04-14/ The Philippine government has filed a protest to China after having over 240 Chinese boats within the Philippine waters. These boats are believed to be manned by militias and are heavily fishing the Philippine waters.
