This pursuit is among rising tensions over disputed waters between China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Additionally, the U.S. has begun to increase their naval presence in the region.

China’s new technology is offering the state a promising source of energy, using a drill that helps explore natural gas resources in the seabed. China currently claims 90% of the South China Sea as their territorial waters, however this claim is not recognized internationally and does not reflect their EEZ.

Tensions within the region have been escalating, this rise began when a Chinese maritime militia vessel entered waters that are a part of the Philippines’s exclusive economic zone. In reaction to this breach of sovereignty, the U.S. deployed a naval strike group, however the pentagon claimed the ship was in routine transit. Overall, the U.S. and the Philippines are developing closer ties through their shared frustration with China.

Additionally, Chinese drones have been circulating Taiwan. In fact, over 15 drones from the mainland flew into and crossed Taiwan’s air defense zone, which resulted in the island to threatening to shoot down the aircrafts.

With the U.S. demonstrating clear support of the Philippines and with Washington passing new legislation to strengthen U.S. Taiwan relations, it would not be in China’s best interest to continue taking an aggressive approach in the South China Sea, because it may lead to direct conflict with the U.S.. Since the two countries are trade partners and depend on each other to maintain healthy economies, both states have incentive to pursue diplomatic reasoning.

However, China’s efforts in the South China Sea is a demonstration of their regional strength and their growing international influence. As China grows into a global hegemon and the U.S. continues to establish its presence in the South China Sea, Beijing may retaliate. More than ⅓ of the world’s trade passes through the South China Sea annually, if tensions continue to rise and conflict in the region emerges there will be intense economic damage.

Link: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/4/9/china-drills-in-disputed-south-china-sea-as-us-bolsters Recently China began drilling deep in the South China Sea in order to retrieve sediment from the seabed.
