The Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority is working on a plan for a process to measure thyroid gland radiation in Japanese residents who are close to the aftermath of a nuclear power plant accident.  Those included in the plan will be pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under the age of 18.  People in these groups have the greatest risk with radiation exposure. The radioactive iodine which can be accidently released with serious nuclear accidents can cause cancer in people in the area.  The radioactive iodine-131 which can be released during a nuclear accident will half in just eight days, so immediate measurements are very important to figure out the radiation exposure levels.  The officials are most concerned about areas where the radiation levels reach 500 micro sieverts per hour because that area needs to be evacuated immediately.  In areas that reach 20 micro sieverts per hour will need to have temporary evacuations until the conditions improve.  These measurement levels were unclear and plans for the response were not enough.  These steps are needed to help improve the care of those effected by accidents like that of the 2011 nuclear power plant accident.  Since then, only 1,000 of the 370,000 children under the age of 18 have been measured for radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While greener, cleaner ways to produce power continue to evolve, issues with some of the methods can cause harm to humans, such as what we see here with nuclear radiation leaks.  While we need to work to stop these sorts of accidents from happening, we need to also work to help those who find themselves in danger from the accident.  Thyroid cancer is a treatable form of cancer, but the thyroid controls so many functions in the body it needs to remain healthily and functioning.  The government and the companies who profit from the production of nuclear radiation need to step up and make sure that the radiation levels are tracked, and actions are taken to protect those in danger.  These actions are long overdue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government needs to protect their citizens and keep them from danger.\u00a0 Citizens need to hold government accountable for their actions and push government to work better for the citizens.\u00a0 Areas with dense populations need more energy, which is cleaner to produce, to keep up with the electric needs of the population.\u00a0 Unfortunately, nuclear energy is easy to produce and is clean form of energy until a problem arises.\u00a0\u00a0My dad has thyroid issues, and he would have been in the age group at high risk during the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in Russia. It is believed that through the jet stream, the particles could have traveled to where he and many of our friends and family have lived. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
